Washington Irving — and “The Devil and Tom Walker” — causes heartburn in an Illinois classroom.

Although including Washington Irving in any curriculum is awesome, I can’t say I disagree with the dispute over this assignment – and not because of the mom’s argument that “If you can’t have God in the classroom, you shouldn’t have the devil either.” Telling a bunch of kids they have to imagine selling their soul to the devil and gluttonously pick what would be their selling point is a bit inappropriate to me.
